Deported students plea for Labour leniency

Updated: 6:30am – A group of Indian students who were deported earlier in the year hope the new government will give them a second chance.

Supporters say they’re struggling to rebuild their lives after being thrown out of New Zealand for using false documents in their visa applications.

They claim they were tricked, by dodgy education agents.

Lawyer Alistair McClymont said the nine students are hoping the Government will take action so they can apply to come back here.

“Because there was a lot of media publicity, they’ve actually found it very difficult to get into employment back in India because many of the employers brand them as trouble makers.,” he said.

The case exposed the growing number of Indian students being brought to New Zealand under false pretenses, with many paying recruiters for a chance at residency.

Labour is yet to comment on the plea, but has previously made it their policy to crackdown on student visas in order to lower immigration.
