Updated: 8:10am – While speaking at the official launch of the E‑ticketing system at the Suva Bus Stand, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum stressed that in order to make the system work there are various penalties in place.
He adds that if a person gets on the bus and the bus does not have an e‑ticketing machine installed or if for some reason the e‑ticketing machine is not working, the bus driver will have to allow the passenger onto the bus for free.
Sayed‑Khaiyum says once the E‑ticketing system has worked out well in the buses, it will also be moved on to the mini‑buses, taxis and ferries that travel between the islands in the maritime zones.
He adds that this will in turn bring about better accountability.
He reiterated that the system will assist people so they will not necessarily have to carry around a lot of cash and this will allow people to have only one mode of payment.
Sayed‑Khaiyum also highlighted that the launching of the E‑ticketing system is a step forward for Fiji in respect of modernizing our country in terms of leaping into the use of electronic technology methodologies and various technology to ensure that Fiji is moving well into the 21st century.
The Attorney General also highlighted that the e‑ticketing system also allows a level of flexibility for those who only want to catch the bus a couple of times with the use of the disposable card and people will not lose out a single cent.
