Education Minister Rosy Akbar has urged parents and teachers to report any form of corporal punishment or abuse to the relevant authorities and ensure their children are safe. Speaking at the opening of Viria District School in Naitasiri, Akbar told parents and teachers that corporal punishment will not be tolerated adding that a lot of teachers are losing their jobs because of it.

The Education Minister says children have their rights and educators and parents need to find other means to discipline their children. The newly commissioned classroom blocks at Viria District School in Naitasiri had been damaged by Cyclone Winston.

It took 7 months to construct and cost $349,000. A total of 430 schools were destroyed during Tropical Cyclone Winston.
