The consumer council has forced supermarkets to discard more than 460 kilograms of rotten potatoes.

Council’s chief executive Seema Shandil says through their market surveillance last week, they found many supermarkets selling rotten potatoes and onions.

Shandil says some of the produce even had maggots on them.

“We saw maggots coming out of the potatoes and we managed to condemn that. I would like to assure the consumers out there that our team will be out there every weekend. We will make sure that we go around and see that the same is not repeated and the consumers are not sold products which are of inferior quality.”

Shandil says consumers also need to be assertive and demand for quality products especially with the shopping rush around the festive season.
