Update: 7:07 am – Labour has pledged to scrap the tax cuts part of the Government’s $2 billion package, but increase the number of families who receive Working for Families.

The Party would also introduce an extra payment to warm homes in the winter months, and a Best Start package for families with kids under three.

National campaign manager Steven Joyce said in doing this, they are taking a lot, and giving a little bit back to a smaller group of people.

“By February they will be putting tax up by $1000 a year for everybody earning above the average wage and on the average wage. And actually because it’s a bracket creep it will be for people below the average wage as well.”

Joyce said because the Budget package is already in place to come in on April 1 next year, the Labour Party’s actually choosing to raise taxes.

“That means that people will pay $1000 a year more in tax if they are earning another $52,000 a year, in fact another $11,000 a year so it’s a significant difference.”
