Updated: 6:00am – LTA Chairman Vijay Maharaj has hit out at Opposition MP Asaeli Radrodro for calling for his resignation and that of his Board.
Radrodro made this stern call following Maharaj’s warning to the public to take the breaching of e-transport card bus seriously, or face fines.
He made the call after LTA fined thirteen people for travelling in buses without valid E-ticketing receipts and failure to pay fares.
Radrodro says it’s not indicated on the card that passengers must keep their bus tickets.
Maharaj responded saying LTA has already given a flexibility period of three months from the date of implementation of e-ticketing legislation.
Under the Electronic Fare Ticketing Act and its electronic fare ticketing regulations, LTA has a mandatory statutory obligation as a statutory Authority to ensure a satisfactory compliance level with these laws.
Maharaj adds if the e-ticketing machines are working in buses and passengers can use their cards, then it’s unfair on them given that some bus passengers or commuters are still not complying with the e-ticketing laws.
The Chairman says the transport sector is making a progress in Fiji for bus industry and the efforts to modernize its services, starting from e-ticketing as a means from cash to cash-less system.
