Nadroga wins protest but Suva keeps HFC Farebrother trophy | NZ FIJI TIMES

UPDATED: 6:07am – The Nadroga Rugby Union has won the protest filed against the Suva Rugby Union regarding the HFC Farebrother Trophy match played last Saturday.

However Suva will defend the trophy against Namosi this weekend as Nadroga Rugby President Tiko Matawalu says there is a gentleman’s agreement that Suva should keep the trophy and continue with the challenges.

Suva Rugby has admitted it was a mistake on their part to field unregistered players in the challenge match which Suva won 24-23.

Matawalu says they have accepted the loss against Suva but were unhappy that not every team is following the competition rules.

FRU Chief Executive John O’Connor says after a gentleman’s agreement, Nadroga Rugby Union decided that Suva Rugby will keep the Farebrother trophy.

The three players who played for Suva included Ratu Meli Kurisaru who was registered with the Nadroga Rugby Union, and Kini Douglas and Inoke Tuisese who are registered with Naitasiri Rugby Union.

The Naitasiri Rugby Union confirmed to Fijivillage today that Douglas and Tuisese have not been formally released from the union while Matawalu confirmed that Kurisaru has not been released by Nadroga.
