A woman is facing a murder charge in connection with a homicide investigation into the death of a Whangārei 5-month-old.
The infant died on August 22 in the suburb of Raumanga, devastating neighbors and the community.
Police launched a homicide investigation and a 28-year-old man was initially charged with assault.
Those charges were upgraded to murder on September 3, but the police investigation continued
Northland police investigations manager Detective Inspector Dene Begbie said a 31-year-old woman was charged with murder at the weekend.
The murder charge against the man will be withdrawn and the original charge of assault on a child reinstated.
The man is due to appear at court again on Tuesday, while the woman is scheduled to appear at Whangārei High Court on October 3.
