It is believed to be that of a 33-year-old man who went missing while snorkelling yesterday afternoon.
He had been snorkelling with two friends and was reported to have got into difficulties in the water about 1.45pm.
The man’s body was discovered about midnight.
His death will be referred to the Coroner.
Rescue teams are searching for a 33-year-old who went missing this afternoon while snorkelling off the Makorori Coast, north of Gisborne.
The police were alerted that a man got into trouble in the water just before 2pm.
He was with two friends, at the time.
Search teams from police, a rescue helicopter, the Coastguard and Land Search and Rescue volunteers have been looking for the man this afternoon.
The Police National Dive Squad is preparing to join the search tomorrow.
