Updated: 8:12am – Sport New Zealand has set a modest target of 16 medals at the 202 Tokyo Olympics.

In its briefing to the new Minister of Sport Grant Robertson, Sport NZ says set its target for Tokyo of 16 or more with a focus on golds.

It will also target 10-14 Paralympic gold medals.

New Zealand won a record breaking 18 medals at last year’s Rio Olympics, a 36 per cent increase on the country’s result in London in 2012.

Of those medals, four were gold, nine were silver and five bronze.

The medal tally in Rio was also four higher than Sport NZ had targeted for the event.

Only one medal is being targeted at next year’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Over $60 million a year is spent on high performance sport in New Zealand each year although Sport NZ has hinted more money could be needed in the future.
