Police earlier said it appeared Mr Kingi had disturbed a group of young people breaking into a vehicle and suffered a fatal wound during a fight.

Interim name suppression was granted for both defendants who made no application for bail. They were remanded in custody to a youth justice residence to reappear in the High Court in Hamilton on 15 August.

The 15-year-old also faces a charge of interfering with a motor vehicle in the Youth Court. Earlier a 12-year-old girl was referred to Youth Aid for matters relating to Mr Kingi’s death.
