Fiji Council of Social Services Executive Director Vani Catanasiga emphasized that Members of Parliament should not receive a pay rise if they are not performing their duties well.

During the National Workers and Community rally in Suva, Catanasiga stressed the need for an independent committee to oversee performance assessments and decisions regarding MP pay raises.

She asked the participants if they agreed that Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) should participate in how MPs make decisions on their salaries, to which everyone agreed.

This issue was outlined in a petition initiated a few weeks ago regarding the increase in salaries and benefits for MPs, the President, and the Speaker.

The committee’s involvement is crucial for monitoring and ensuring the well-being of MPs.
