FJ NEWS | FCS is facing challenges in providing medical care to elderly inmates

The Fiji Correction Service (FCS) is facing challenges in managing the medical needs of inmates, especially those over 60, in Nasinu.

More than fifty inmates who have been convicted of sexual offences are experiencing serious health issues, such as strokes, which have left them unable to take care of themselves.

The FCS is required by law to provide treatment for these existing conditions, but some inmates are serving non-parole sentences, which means they cannot be released early.

FCS officers are now taking on the role of caregivers, providing the necessary medical attention and daily care. This additional responsibility is straining resources and staff, who are primarily trained in correctional management.

The FCS is considering various solutions, including providing additional caregiver training for officers, improving medical facilities within correctional institutions, and potentially partnering with healthcare providers.

However, this situation emphasizes the need for broader discussions on how to manage elderly and infirm inmates.
