Former Domino’s Pizza franchise Canterbury owner Chang-Wei Tsao, also known as David Tsao, has been sentenced to 10 months of home detention for alleged migrant exploitation.
Tsao was guilty of six charges, including underpaying wages, holiday pay, and premium payments to one victim.
Immigration officials received a complaint from an employee at the Kaiapoi store who was working beyond their visa conditions.
Tsao was found to have coerced the foreign national to work beyond their visa expiry date and forced three student visa holders to work beyond their 20-hour work week.
Tsao also committed serious exploitation of another employee, underpayment of wages and leave, and requiring the employee to pay unlawful premiums.
The sentence is expected to convey a strong message to those exploiting migrants. Tsao pleaded guilty to the charges on February 9th.
