The Fiji government has allocated funds to transform the Vunirewa Bible School in Serua into the country’s first child well-being center.
The Methodist Church has donated the building to the Ministry through an agreement, and the center’s setup is still subject to cabinet approval.
The facility will have a clinical component, with the Ministry of Health consulting.
The Ministry aims to protect children living on the streets and will review various segments of the law.
The Ministry for Women, Children, and Social Protection has been allocated $199.5 million in the 2024-25 national budget, with $800,000 allocated to establish the Department of Children.
Confining someone at Saint Giles Hospital still requires family consent.
The Ministry for Women, Children, and Social Protection has been given the authority to remove children or adults from the streets unless a crime has been committed.
