A shopper at Auckland’s Manukau Mall was locked inside a library for an hour after reports of a person holding a gun.

Westfield Manukau went into a “precautionary” lockdown shortly after 1 pm after a concerned person was reported near the mall.

A person was seen in the vicinity of some stores with an object in their hand, but it has not been established if this was a firearm.

Shirl’e, a local, was on her way to the library when the lockdown began and described it as a “pretty scary” experience.

Security guards directed stores to close their doors, and shortly after, the person who caused the lockdown was seen leaving the area and has not been found.

The lockdown was lifted once the person had left the area.
