The police are looking for information about the people who ignited a dangerous flare at Haulashore Island in Nelson around 10 p.m. last Sunday, prompting a search-and-rescue operation.
Witnesses saw a small dinghy with two individuals on board.
The Coastguard, Surf Lifesaving NZ, and the Harbour Master all responded to the incident.
