A man from Papakura, who was allegedly driving more than five times over the legal alcohol limit, miraculously escaped unharmed after crashing his vehicle into a pole.

The accident happened around 5 p.m. on Monday when his car veered off Clevedon-Kawakawa Road and struck a pole.

This caused power lines to be brought down, and a lane was closed while emergency services rushed to the scene.

Fortunately, the driver emerged unharmed, and no other road users were hurt in the crash.

Inspector Joe Hunter called the outcome “miraculous.” Police confirmed that the man was likely distracted by his mobile phone when he veered off the road.

They also alleged that the man returned a breath alcohol reading of 1305mcg, which is five times over the legal limit in New Zealand.

The 33-year-old Papakura man has been suspended from driving and will appear in court at a later date.
