Murray Chong, a councillor in New Plymouth, was hit by a gunshot while campaigning against the introduction of a Māori ward.
The council has decided to keep its Te Purutanga Mauri Pūmanawa Māori Ward, following new legislation that required local authorities to either remove a Māori ward introduced without a poll or hold a vote.
A binding poll will now take place alongside the 2025 local body elections.
Chong stated that he didn’t want to face any resistance to a Māori ward next year due to safety concerns. He mentioned that he was used to people shouting obscenities at his house as they drove past but noted that “something even more disgusting [happened]” last week.
Mayor Neil Holdom confirmed that evidence showed Chong’s vehicle had been shot at and condemned the aggressive behavior towards council-elected representatives across the country.
He urged people to control their emotions and address the aggressive behavior in politics as society becomes increasingly polarized rather than accommodating differing views.
Te Purutanga Mauri Pūmanawa Māori Ward councillor Te Waka McLeod denounced the shooting at Chong’s vehicle and any abuse towards councillors, and expressed hope that the outcome of the previous poll on Māori wards in New Plymouth could be reversed.
McLeod emphasized the need for a communication strategy to counter disinformation and educate those undecided or opposed to the Māori ward.
This strategy would aim to dispel misconceptions and fears about Māori wards. Police have received a report of intentional damage and are investigating the incident.
