Dan Hone, who died on Parliament grounds, was distraught over the impending sale of his waterfront home with his mother. He had racked up $40,000 in mortgage arrears.
It’s uncertain if his death will be treated as a suspected suicide as it’s currently under investigation by the Coroner.
Paramedics attended to Hone after being called to the scene before 8 am. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Hone’s sister, Mika Quinn, mentioned that in the week before his death, he was distressed. He sent her messages expressing his distress about the situation. The siblings had been trying to prevent a forced sale in recent months.
After discovering that their mother was three years and $40,000 in arrears on her $400,000 mortgage.
Hone had contributed $5000 toward the debt. He could not halt the planned auction on August 22nd, leading to him “losing hope.”
The family postponed the sale, and the property is now set to be auctioned on the same date.
A former mechanic, Hone moved in a couple of years ago to care for their mother. His mother is around 70 years old and dealing with multiple health issues.
They were concerned that the property might sell at a low price at auction. Especially since their mother had not permitted open houses. The family is now organizing a private farewell once relatives from overseas have arrived.
Following that, Hone’s ashes will be divided among family members, including his father, who is based in Australia.
Thorhilda Brennan, the mother of Hone’s 30-year-old son, described her former partner’s decision to move home to care for his mother as typical of his “really loving, caring family person” nature.
