A man has been charged with the stabbing murder of Stephen Thorpe of Blockhouse Bay.

A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Auckland insect expert Stephen Thorpe.

The 26-year-old was arrested near the Blockhouse Bay Tennis Club, where Thorpe was found with stab wounds on Saturday. He later died at the scene.

Detective Inspector Glenn Baldwin announced the latest development, stating that the investigation had progressed rapidly and that a person of interest had been taken into custody.

A search warrant was executed overnight at a nearby address. The investigation will involve analyzing CCTV footage and speaking with witnesses.

Police staff will continue to work in the community as part of the ongoing area canvas. The police have requested that anyone with information or CCTV contact them.

The 26-year-old appeared in the Auckland District Court and entered no plea, with his identity remaining suppressed.

He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in the High Court in Auckland on September 18.
