A man died after pointing a firearm at police and having his vehicle spiked after fleeing officers south of Rotorua last night.
Police were called to the rural area after gunshots were heard around 9 p.m.
The Armed Offenders Squad, Eagle Helicopter, and police dog unit were deployed to help locate the driver.
The Armed Offenders Squad deployed road spikes in Putāruru shortly before 11 p.m., bringing the vehicle to a stop.
The man died from injuries, and support is being provided to attending staff and the man’s family.
Several police investigations are underway, including a Critical Incident Investigation.
The matter will be referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
