In February 2023, forensic screening identified tens of thousands of images and video files depicting child sexual abuse.

The man stored over 50,000 images and videos on his devices, with almost 12,000 files imported or downloaded.

The majority of the material showed actual children being sexually abused, in some cases very violently. The man was arrested and charged with importing and possessing objectionable material.

He was sentenced to seven-years-three-months’ imprisonment at the Rotorua District Court.

Customs takes this offense very seriously and is one of three agencies in New Zealand working closely.

The other two are the Police and the Department of Internal Affairs. These agencies will identify, investigate, and arrest those who share this material to propagate the vicious cycle of harm.
