UPDATED: 6:28am – The Government has increased the rate of meal allowances of all Civil Servants by just over hundred percent.

The new rate is $20, an increase of $11. This was revealed by the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum at the consultation for job evaluation for teachers at Sigatoka.

Sayed-Khaiyum says the decision came after taking into account the cost of food across cities and towns in the country.

“Currently, the meal allowance is $9. For those of you for example, this lady got called up by Ministry of Education to attend something, official basis, currently the meal allowance is $9. We actually made the change, it’ll come into effect once it is rolled out. It is now going to increase to $20.”

He says this will reviewed in two and half years from the date it comes into effect.
