Buses continue to emit thick black smoke despite warning from LTA

Updated: 5:52am – Despite a warning by the Land Transport Authority, concerns continue to be raised that some buses on our roads are emitting thick black smoke on a daily basis.

We have been raising the question with the authorities over the past few months on why these vehicles continue to remain on our roads.

We have not seen officials checking the buses that are at the Suva Bus Stand every day.

The news team was on the ground and witnessed five different buses from four different bus companies emitting thick smoke.

The authority responsible for monitoring and penalising buses that emit thick smoke at the Suva Bus Stand is the Suva City Council.

They have about six officers that are allocated to monitor buses for excess emissions and oil spillage.

LTA is the sole authority that is responsible for the testing of vehicles on an annual basis before they are declared to be roadworthy.

We have also been raising the question on how these vehicles are being approved to be roadworthy and whether random checks at the bus stands and other spots are being done on a daily basis.

The LTA works with the SCC to monitor these buses at the Suva Bus Stand.

The SCC says it has removed buses for emitting heavy smoke and it will continue to do so.
