Councillors are requesting answers regarding barriers at the tragic SH1 crash site

Auckland councillors are calling for a thorough examination of the median barriers at a fatal car crash south of Auckland.

The incident occurred when a truck traveling southbound on State Highway 1 near Ramarama blew a tire. A truck crashed through a barrier and hit a van carrying six people.

Three people were killed, all seasonal workers from Samoa, aged 45, 37, and 32. Three others in the van were injured, and a 21-year-old remained in hospital in a critical condition.

Franklin ward councillor Andy Baker expressed concerns about the suitability of the wire barriers separating north and southbound vehicles.

Manukau ward councillor Alf Filipina called for accountability. Police, and the New Zealand Transport Agency continued their investigations into the crash.

Waka Kotahi national maintenance and operations manager Andrew Clark said the agency was helping the police Serious Crash Unit. Agency is conducting its review of the crash site.

Investigation would examine whether road or roadside factors contributed to the crash and any safety improvements that could be made.

Dr. Douglas Wilson, stated that improving barriers on roads and highways is a gradual process. New Zealand must consider its financial constraints.
