In total, six people have been killed in four separate crashes since about midday yesterday.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) confirmed two people had died in the crash on State Highway 3 before the turnoff to Waitomo Caves, about 5km south of Otorohanga and 1km north of Golf Rd.

A FENZ spokesman said the damage to one of the three cars involved only was minor.

The road was partly blocked, the police spokeswoman said.

Police were called to the scene about 9.50am.

Jean Wicks lives nearby and said she could see flashing lights after the crash, but emergency services vehicles were starting to leave.

The crash had occurred on “the top of the hill”, she said.

Yesterday afternoon, a father and son died in a crash involving a tanker near Marsden Point in Northland.
