Updated: 7:25am – Peni Rarawa first thought Police were after fleeing robbers when he saw them in pursuit of a black four-wheel drive in a high-speed chase through Suva.

Mr Rarawa was shocked to learn that the driver of the black vehicle in question had allegedly rammed into his daughter not so long before.

Raijeli Biuvasa, 12, was in a stable condition yesterday at the CWM Hospital after she was initially rushed to the Nuffield Clinic in Tamavua.

A medical source said Raijeli was in a lot of pain when she first arrived for examination but gradually improved under medical care.

“She was sent to the shop, which is about 500 metres away from our residence, to buy something,” said an evidently disturbed Mr Rarawa.

“On her way back, she was walking on the right side, and the car hit her from the back.

Raijeli was to go on an island holiday with her cousin, who will arrive from France this Christmas.

“She’s being monitored very closely because she was vomiting a lot,” he added.

Vomiting after a major accident could signal a head injury – or a concussion – but a medical confirmation was yet to confirm this.

Mr Rarawa was relieved his daughter’s injuries were less serious than first thought. But the manner in which she was wounded angered him.

“My only wish is that for drivers to be more careful,” he said.

“Not only the drivers but the instructors as well; if the drivers are trained well, we will have fewer accidents on our roads.”

As family members began to trickle in to the emergency ward yesterday, Mr Rarawa retreated to the quiet of his thoughts.

“I was just thinking,” he said, “Raijeli would help us take care of her elder sister who is a child with special needs.”

Before returning to his daughter’s ward, Mr Rarawa added: “Some young people don’t even deserve to be driving on public roads.”

The dramatic chase culminated in the arrest of the alleged suspect but not before he allegedly damaged a few other cars in the process. Another man was also apprehended, who is believed to be the brother of the suspect. He is said to have been at Richards Road where the chase ended.
