UPDATED: 7:13am – The solicitor for the Quake Outcasts said their settlement with the Government is not an election ploy.

The group of Christchurch red-zoners were offered nothing for their damaged land and properties, and took both the CEO of CERA and Earthquake Minister Gerry Brownlee to court.

That resulted in a Crown offer for their land, but not their homes, followed by a successful challenge in the Court of Appeal.

They’ve since been paid 100 percent of the pre-earthquake value of their land.

Now the Government’s agreeing to pay 80 percent of the pre-earthquake rateable value of their uninsured property, and a one-off payment for court costs.

The Outcasts’ solicitor Grant Cameron said this week’s settlement wasn’t an election tactic.

“Court of Appeal heard the case less than two months ago and it just happened that the judgement came out coincidentally with this election campaign.”

He said his clients’ files are closing, but the battle continues for many other property owners.

“There are a lot of people who are on similar circumstances who have not received this offer and they probably need to reflect on where they go to from here.”
