The agriculture ministry is working closely together with the New Zealand government to improve the dairy industry in Fiji.
This was highlighted by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Uraia Waibuta during a field trip organized by the Prime Consulting International Ltd at the Koronivia research station in Nausori.
Waibuta says there’s a few components within the program which had been implemented a year ago and they want to show the farmers some of the progress that has been done.
This programs have been done as part of the capacity building and improvements programs in the dairy industry.
Waibuta adds they want to bring in the highest level of efficiency to lift the dairy production and try to reduce the high import bill of the dairy products.
He says farmers play a very important role in taking the dairy industry forward.
The field was part of the Fiji Dairy Industry Development Initiative (FDIDI) program which is a bilateral aid project supported by the Fiji and New Zealand Governments.
The project is being managed by Prime Consulting International Ltd which is drawing on New Zealand experience to improve the Fiji dairy industry.
The five year program aims to improve the productivity and profitability of the Fiji dairy industry and tackle a shortage of fresh milk production in the local market.
