The Ministry of Health in Fiji has reported 552 new HIV cases in the first six months of 2024, a 33% increase from 2023. The majority of these cases are in individuals under 39 years old, with a significant increase in cases among injectable drug users.
The Ministry also noted that sexual transmission is the primary means of HIV spread in Fiji. There is a significant increase in new cases diagnosed among injectable drug users.
The Ministry expects a further increase in new cases as it strengthens nationwide screening and testing. From January to June 2024, thirteen deaths were recorded in people living with HIV from HIV-related illnesses, compared to 82 deaths in the same period last year.
The ministry urges the public and young people to avoid high-risk activities that increase their chances of acquiring HIV. Such as injectable drug use, needle sharing, unprotected sex, Bluetooth, and chemsex activities.
The ministry emphasizes that HIV is not a death sentence, and with appropriate treatment. People who are living with HIV can continue to engage in everyday living activities.
It encourages those exposed to high-risk activities to get tested and know their HIV status. Those who have tested positive to seek treatment promptly and continue diligently with their treatment.
