The Health Ministry in Fiji is calling for a significant change in the country’s approach to suicide.

Health Minister Dr Atonio Lalabalavu emphasizes the need to break the culture of silence and stigma surrounding suicide, urging a more open and supportive approach.

He believes that even small conversations about suicide can significantly support those at risk.

Between 2016 and 2021, there were 1,276 cases of suicide and attempted suicide in Fiji. He stated that nearly half of these attempts resulted in death. The highest number of cases was recorded in 2019, with 244 incidents reported.

The WHO Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan of 2030 highlights suicide as the second most common cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29.

Dr Lalabalavu emphasized the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding suicide.

He has encouraged conversations in everyday settings, such as places of worship and community spaces.

He referred to the alarming global statistics from the World Health Organization, which report that approximately 800,000 people die by suicide every year.

Fiji will observe World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10 with the 2024 theme, “Change the Narrative,”

It’s a calling for individuals and organizations to start conversations on suicide prevention.

Raise awareness and foster support across all levels of society.
