Fiji: National Coach Christophe Gamel wary of Rewa Players

I just hope the Rewa players do not find it hard to adapt to my style of play which I have been doing so far with these boys.

Vodafone Fiji Football head coach Christophe Gamel made these remarks as the national team counts down for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers against New Zealand next week.

The Rewa district players will be joining the national team next week as they are currently participating in the OFC Champions League.

He said some players in Rewa have great skills to manage the ball and that is what he expects from them.

“Since they will be playing three hard games (OFC Champions League) the fitness level should be fine, so I have to work more tactically.

“If they are mentally fit they should go very easily with the team, but I will not have time and pity if they try to be sneaky.

“But I trust Rewa district and officials as they are also behind the national team.”

Gamel said all other players are gelling well with the team.

“The boys are doing well during the training but it’s not enough as I can’t play with my full team.

“What I expect from them is to have consistency during the game; being regular, always trying some move and work hard.

“They give their best and that is the most important thing for me.”

For the experienced defender Taniela Waqa, adapting to the new style of player has been a good challenge for the players.

“Every day we’re learning new things as our new coach always comes up with new ideas,” he said.

“It’s a challenge to us players to adapt to his style of play.

“We’re getting there day by day as he tells us what to do in different areas of play.”

The team is expected to be named next Wednesday.
