“People should respect the men in uniform, especially when they are there to protect people,” he said.

The Tui Macuata said most of these attacks were mainly carried out by youths and these actions showed there was a breakdown in family circles.

“Respect is sadly missing from homes. To stop this people involved should be given long prison terms.”

Tailevu North chief Ratu Isaia Tuirakiwaimaro said the attack on Police was mainly done by iTaukei youths.

He said these youths have no respect in their homes. Most have been involved in criminal activities in areas where they lived in.

The family elders should teach them respect and village elders should talk to them about law and order, he said.

“Attacking a Police officer was against the law and those involved should be punished.

“Corporal punishment should be legalised to be used on those who commit such acts,” he said.

Turaga Na Tui Nabou Semi Matalau said attacks on Police were unlawful and those responsible must face the full brunt of the law.

“Because many iTaukei youths are involved, the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs should visit villages and offer counseling. Many youths today have no respect for the law,” he said.

Ucunivanua Village chief Ratu Sevanaia Verata said the attack on Police was uncalled for and those involved should be given long prison term.

“People should respect the uniform because the person wearing it is responsible for the protection of all people,” he said.
