The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation’s principal welfare officer senior citizens unit, Dilitiana Baleinabuli, said renovation works for the buildings were in the pipeline.
It was made just before World War II in 1939 to act as a camp for British and Australian soldiers, now it is known as the Samabula Golden Age Home.
The buildings, which are 80 years old, are home to 55 residents who are either senior citizens or adults neglected by their families.
The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation’s principal welfare officer senior citizens unit, said renovation works for the buildings were in the pipeline.
“The buildings have a historic significance, but are quite old. We inherited the buildings from the Ministry of Health when our ministry took over the Golden Age Home three years ago,” she said.
“We have talked about the renovations and have made relevant submissions. We are hoping to do this and at the same time do it in a manner that makes the home better and improved.
“Renovations will happen, perhaps not in a year, but it is definitely in the pipeline for the Golden Age Home in Samabula.”
The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation manages three Golden Age Homes – one in Lautoka, one in Labasa and the other in Samabula.
Of the three, the home in Samabula has the oldest buildings and the highest number of residents.
