The Police Special Response Unit divers have temporarily suspended their operations in the search for a vehicle that is believed to be submerged in the Rewa River.

Police Spokesperson, Ana Naisoro has confirmed that the team made one attempt but due to the strong currents and poor visibility the search turned out negative.

Naisoro says that the strong current is also impacting the search efforts and a decision has been made to temporarily call off any dive expeditions for the safety of the officers.

Police earlier received information that the driver of the vehicle that went into the river in Naduruloulou near Baulevu, Nausori could be an 18 year old man.

Naisoro says a woman came forward and said that her son had taken the vehicle. She says both her son and the vehicle cannot be located.

Naisoro also confirms that the Police Special Response Team divers could not dive into the Rewa River yesterday due to strong currents.

The driver of the vehicle whilst proceeding towards Nausori tried to overtake another car when he lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road, and went into the river at about 8.20 yesterday morning.

Police had earlier said that the driver and three passengers are believed to be still inside the submerged vehicle.

Police officers are conducting house to house investigations to establish the identities of the people in the vehicle.
