A 21-year-old man has tragically lost his life in a speeding accident near Draunivi, Tavua. The Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, urges drivers to take speed warnings seriously.
Initial information suggests that the driver lost control of his vehicle while trying to overtake another car, resulting in the accident.
The victim was rushed to Tavua Hospital but passed away this morning.
Four people with the victim have been treated. Despite road safety stakeholders issuing reminders, drivers are still booked exceeding the national speed limit, a contributing factor to accident and fatality statistics.
Despite warnings and advisories from the Police and the Land Transport Authority, checkpoint traffic officers continue to be ignored.
The road death toll currently stands at 31, compared to 57 for the same period last year.
SSP Divuana believes that acknowledging and accepting responsibilities for road safety can help prevent further increases in fatalities.
