The high rate of school dropout in Fiji has resulted in increased unemployment.
These difficult circumstances have forced children into illegal activities, according to an assessment by the Fiji Council of Social Services.
Executive Director Vani Catanasiga argues that many children are unaware of the risks they face.
When forced to support their families, it can lead to involvement in illicit activities.
Some youth may even graduate from drug use to trafficking. While there is adequate legislation, insufficient resources exist to address this issue in rural and urban communities.
Catanasiga also emphasizes the importance of integrity within law enforcement agencies to prevent corruption.
The Council of Social Services (FCOSS) calls for genuine collaboration between the government and civil society organizations to tackle this issue.
