A 55-year-old man from Tavua has died, and a 44-year-old man is in the hospital after a locomotive they were in tumbled down the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) train lane bridge at Lausa, Tavua.
The incident happened around midday yesterday. The locomotive veered towards the left side while approaching the FSC train lane bridge and fell into a dry creek with a few cane carts.
Both men were trapped inside the locomotive. Officers from Tavua Police and Fire Station worked together to rescue the trapped men.
The 44-year-old Locomotive Driver is receiving treatment at Lautoka Aspen Hospital, while the body of the 55-year-old pointsman is at Ba Aspen Hospital Morgue.
The police investigations are ongoing.
