The court reviewed a request by Former Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum to modify his bail conditions to seek medical treatment in Singapore.
State Prosecutor Unaisi Ratukalou raised concerns about the validity of Sayed-Khaiyum’s medical condition, as no medical assessments had been submitted since June 15.
The prosecution presented medical assessments from Oceania Hospital, obtained through a search warrant, to challenge the necessity of overseas treatment.
Dr. Sireli Kaloucava, a specialized urologist, testified that the required treatment could be effectively carried out locally, citing the availability of necessary equipment in Fiji.
Defense counsel Devanesh Sharma argued that medical opinions may differ among professionals and highlighted Sayed-Khaiyum’s personal and professional challenges.
Sayed-Khaiyum, along with former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Health Minister Neil Sharma, is facing two counts of abuse of office.
Suva Magistrate Sufia Hamza is expected to rule on the bail variation application on Friday at 12 pm.
