The Suva Magistrate Yogesh Prasad has denied the bail variation application filed by former Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for his trip to Singapore for medical treatment. Sayed-Khaiyum is facing charges of abuse of office for allegedly authorizing the government to pay taxes for former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem without the required approval from the Constitutional Offices Commission and the President.
Magistrate Prasad stated that Fiji has qualified doctors who can attend to Sayed-Khaiyum’s medical needs and that he is not deprived of any necessary medical procedures. He also mentioned that there is no evidence to support the need for Sayed-Khaiyum to be treated abroad, and the court did not give weight to Dr. Singh’s report stating the same.
In its objection to the application, the state underscored the seriousness of the charges against Sayed-Khaiyum, citing him as a flight risk. This emphasis on the gravity of the charges highlights the significance of the case. The case against the former Attorney General is scheduled to be called again on the 16th of next month.
