Legislative efforts are being made to combat scams

Fiji’s government is working on legislative reforms to address the growing issue of scams.

Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica has proposed consolidating existing laws and introducing new regulations to combat fraudulent activities.

Kamikamica emphasized the inadequacy of current laws in tackling scams, such as online phishing and deceptive marketing tactics.

The Ministry has initiated a proactive approach to legislative reforms, developing clear pathways for enhancing consumer protection measures and strengthening penalties for offenders involved in fraudulent practices.

The Ministry is set to launch National Scam Week in collaboration with the Consumer Council to raise awareness and foster a national dialogue on the issue.

The Ministry’s primary concern is the inadequacy of current laws in effectively tackling various forms of scams.
