A 48-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for sexually abusing his 12-year-old niece over a year.
The man, a security officer, was convicted of three counts of rape. Justice Aruna Aluthge emphasized the gravity of the crime and the necessity of a stringent punishment to condemn the offender’s actions and deter others from contemplating similar offences.
The sentence aims to protect the public and show that such actions will have severe consequences.
The man, who is married but has no children, will serve his sentence to reflect the severity of his actions and the community’s condemnation of such offences.
He will be eligible for parole after serving 11 years behind bars.
