The government is not considering a 30% pay increase for teachers, as there has been no pay rise for the past 17 years.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, stated that he expected better from union leaders to respond, but the Fiji Teachers Union General Secretary is already discussing strikes. There needs to be a much better appreciation and understanding of where they have come from after 17 years.
Prasad advised the FTU General Secretary to focus on resolving issues and to acknowledge the positive change in the Fijian Teachers Association and Fiji Teachers Union’s ability to discuss their issues with the Minister of Finance.
The 2024/2025 National Budget announcement will provide further insight into the government’s financial plans and potential implications for the education sector.
