Opposition Leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa made a statement saying that the business committee and parliament are imposing severe restrictions on the type of questions tabled by Opposition MPs in the house.

Kepa says that this week, any questions, motions and petitions that has to do with the sugar industry, with iTaukei and indigenous rights and developments within any opposition MPs constituency have been refused.

“When we bring up these issues on sugar, it becomes a difficult issue to take through. Another one if it has anything to do with indigenous population, it is considered a racist issue. Some other issues that we bring up that becomes very difficult is if we mention any areas in Fiji that needs attention.”

She says that therefore the government has been selective allowing only questions, petitions and motions that do not criticize government on its policies and programs or that is not likely to gather the support of the public against it.

Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament, Dr Jiko Luveni says that she will only comment on SODELPA’s statement once she reviews the content.
