Fiji’s Consumer Council has discovered that supermarkets switch off meat freezers at night to save on costs.

As a result, consumers are being sold and consuming meat that is discolored and spoiled, posing a health risk.

Cross-contamination of meat is also a frequent issue. Improper freezer temperature maintenance has caused ice buildup, compromising the meat products’ safety and quality.

The Council urges businesses to view complaints as valuable feedback that can help improve products and services.

This year, the Council has received over 200 complaints regarding food services in supermarkets, signaling a troubling trend.

However, this number represents only a fraction of the actual issues. Many consumers also lodge complaints with the Ministry of Health, municipal councils, or the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission.

The Council expects to receive more than 400 complaints by the year’s end.
