The Select Committee on Economic Affairs is concerned about the decline in sugar cane production in Fiji despite the availability of funds from the Sugar Cane Growers Fund and assistance from the Sugar Ministry.
The committee emphasized the need for strong coordination and collaboration among key agencies to increase production. The committee also highlighted the duplication of roles among several subsidiary bodies in the sugar industry, such as the Sugar Ministry, FSC, Sugar Cane Growers Fund, Sugar Cane Growers Council, Agriculture Ministry, Forestry Ministry,
Sugar Research Institute of Fiji and the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB). The committee believes that developing a comprehensive sugar policy is critical to ensuring industry stakeholders are better informed about future strategy and policy direction.
