A severe water shortage has affected farming communities in the Northern Division. Families must spend an additional $70 weekly on water trucks from distant locations.

These communities, which have relied on rainwater and boreholes for decades, need a government-metered water supply.

The situation has worsened since May due to the dry season in the region.

Water tanks are empty, and water sources have dried up, leaving residents to rely solely on government water carting.

Cane farmer Tota Ram reports that the situation has worsened since May due to the dry season.

Another cane farmer, Dharma Pillay shares the challenges, especially with laborers during the cane crushing season.

Farmers hope the government will soon address the urgent need for water supply extension pipes. This has to reach every household in the area, which has been neglected for the past 50 years.

The Water Authority of Fiji is working on plans to supply water to farming communities in the coming weeks.
