Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka delivered a crucial message, emphasizing the vital role of public engagement in discussing constitutional matters. His commitment to this principle ensures that the public’s voice is heard and valued in decision-making.

Prime Minister Rabuka believes the Constitution is not just a document but a revered symbol that unites the Fijian people. According to him, discussions should occur in political settings, and the public’s input will be carefully considered in consultation with the government’s legal advisors to determine the best course of action.

Opposition member Viliame Naupoto has expressed concerns about the Constitution’s perceived political affiliations, particularly in relation to his former party, Fiji First.

A bill must be presented as an Act to amend the Constitution in order to propose an amendment to the Constitution.

If the Parliament passes the bill, the Speaker will notify the President, who will then refer the bill to the Electoral Commission for a referendum.

If three-quarters of registered voters vote in favor of the bill during the referendum, the President must assent to it. Upon the President’s assent, the bill will come into force.
