Updated: 6:55am – A girl has died after being hit by a train at Ngaruawahia, north of Hamilton.
A freight train travelling from Hamilton to Auckland struck the 11-year-old on a railway bridge in Ngaruawahia at about 6pm yesterday.

KiwiRail said it was tragic that the young girl had died as a result of the accident.
Police said officers were providing support to the girl’s family and the train driver.
KiwiRail said the driver was distressed and had been relieved of duties, following normal practice.
The police are investigating.
